Desfontainia

This group consists of only one tender, evergreen shrub found wild in South America, particularly the Andes. D. spinosa is a handsome shrub that slowly grows up to 61/2 feet high. The small, rigid, glossy green leaves are shaped like the leaves of the Holly, with spiny margins. In late summer, tubular-shaped, scarlet flowers with bright yellow mouths are borne. They are 11/2 inches long.

Pot Cultivation

This shrub can only be grown in mild climates. They need a sheltered location in cool, moist soil, such as loamy soil to which a little peat has been added. This shrub will not thrive in alkaline or shallow soil over limestone. Pruning really isn't necessary, except to shape a bit.
